Members Talk: David Charlie

  • GATO Gallery 67 Fitzroy Street Surry Hills, NSW, 2010 Australia (map)

After Us, the Flood, presented at Eloise Cato Gallery, sees David Charlie re-engage with his photographic archive spanning more than two decades which emerged from a period spent living and working on
a farm in regional Western Australia. Being at a critical distance from the metropolis’ apotheosised cultural identity, conceived hedonistic fantasies abounded, playacted in antipodean distortion by Charlie and his peers. Here the archive is not returned to as fixed document, but annexed by painterly re-touching– a retrogression reworked, layered, and unsettled, allowing timelines to coalesce in compositions where nudes recur in moments where they are meeting themselves naked across time.

David Charlie is an artist specialising in photography, performance and video media. David’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at the Perth Centre for Photography and STILLS Gallery, as well as group exhibitions such as PHOTO 2024 and the Pingyao Photography Festival in China.
